An ice cream store owner has credited Pokémon Go with saving his business thanks to the placement of a nearby PokéStop.
Gary Dear is the 61-year-old of owner of Mad Hatter Ice Cream in the Washington city of Anacortes and has been struggled to keep the doors open and eventually closed the shop permanently while recovering from a neurological illness from his time in the Navy.
The report by NBC affiliate station King 5 says friends encouraged Dear to open his doors for one more try, then two weeks later he noticed an increase in people hanging out around the store. Multiple nearby PokéStops drawing players to the area, with the bonus side effect of boosting Dear’s ice cream sales.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expected it to end up like this,” said Dear to King 5 reporter Jake Whittenberg. “I’ve never seen anything take off like this.”
