Nintendo says Pokémon Go boosting sales of 3DS, older Pokémon games

The Nintendo 3DS had an amazing month in July, beating out the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to take the number one sales spot, thanks largely to Pokémon Go. Market research firm NPD Group released figures showing the 3DS enjoying an 80% year-on-year sales boost that Nintendo has attributed to the unprecedented popularity of Pokémon Go.

Analysis by VG247 added fuel to the Pokémon sales fire reporting Pokémon X and Y from 2011 saw a 200% year-on-year sales increase, while Pokémon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire from 2014 had an 80% year-on-year hike in sales.

Lapsed fans rediscovering Pokémon won’t have to wait long for the next big adventure with Pokémon Sun and Moon for the Nintendo 3DS due to be released on November 18.

Editorial note: Seriously, Pokémon Sun and Moon look like the best Pokémon game I’ve seen in a long time, probably since HeartGold and SoulSilver. It looks like 2016 will continue to be a massive year for Pokémon.
