Pokémon Go earned more than some summer blockbusters this year

Just a few days shy of its two month launch anniversary Pokémon Go has raked in $440 million dollars, which is more than the global box office of some 2016’s biggest films according to a report by SensorTower.

By comparison the much-hyped Warcraft movie pulled in just $433.5 million worldwide, even failing to break $100 million in North America. Other films beaten by Pokémon Go include Independence Day: Resurgence ($382 million), Star Trek Beyond ($244 million), Ghostbusters ($217 million) and, oddly enough, the mobile-game-turned-movie-franchise Angry Birds ($346 million).

To put all of this in perspective 2016’s biggest film so far is Captain America: Civil War, which grossed $1.15 billion, followed closely by Zootopia at $1 billion, and Finding Dory sitting just outside of the billionaires club at $930 million.
