Makers of third-party apps that exploit the Pokémon Go API have been receiving cease and desist letters from The Pokémon Company, with some even receiving threats of legal action.
A report by The Verge tells of GutHub user Mila432 receiving one such letter, informing them they could “potentially violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act”, though it is unclear if The Pokémon Company could actually pursue this in a court of law.
Some contributors to Pokémon Go Dev on Reddit have posted their letters online, with one user even posting an email from Google informing them their developer account had been completely shut down. The offending app, PokeAlert, was designed to that alerted users of nearby Pokémon with a push notification.
Currently it appears developers of bots, designed to play the game for the user, are receiving actual legal threats, while those developing radar tracking app have gotten off with sternly worded cease and desist letters.
